Joseph Portoghese, MD, FACS
Dr. Portoghese is the Chief Academic Officer and Designated Institutional Official for the Graduate Medical Education Research department. He has been a member of the medical staff of Florida Hospital Since 1989, and was president of the medical staff from 2004-2006. As Florida Hospital moved forward into the medical education arena, Dr. Portoghese was selected to become Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program, which was first accredited in 2006. Dr. Portoghese is a graduate of the University of South Florida College of Medicine, where he also completed his residency training. While in private practice since completion of his training, he has focused on general surgery. Dr. Portoghese has been a clerkship faculty for Florida State University College of Medicine since 2002, and was appointed Associate Professor of Surgery for the University of Central Florida college of Medicine in 2007. Dr. Portoghese is board certified diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.
Joy Gaabucyan is the GME Research & Quality Improvement Liaison for the Graduate Medical Education Research department. Joy helps the residents with planning and completing their transformative biomedical research projects. She helps oversee the objective of the Graduate Medical Education Research Office, which is to create a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment to stimulate and support high quality scholarly activities within our department. Our ultimate goal is to advance quality of care and patient related outcomes by providing residents and faculty with the resources, knowledge and infrastructure to plan and conduct transformative biomedical research.
